Bates, Curtis H. - was born in Knott County, Kentucky on May 23, 1906 to Lum and Lizza Thornsberry and died on March 19, 1999, at the Medical Center of Southern Indiana in Charlestown, making his stay here on earth 92 years, 9 months and 24 days. He married Lettie Franklin on August 8, 1931. To this union were born four children. His wife, Lettie, and two daughters, Joyce and Wilma, preceded him in death. Later in life he met and married Leona Wright Bates. Surviving are his wife, Leona Wright Bates of Letcher Co., Ky.; three sons: Elwood Bates of British Columbia, Canada; Arthur Bates of South Carolina; Edward Bates of Michigan; daughter, Mary Bates Harbin of Hibernia, Indiana; two brothers, Everett Bates and Isadore Bates; two sisters, Sadie King and Augie Slone; twenty-five grandchildren; his stepchildren and many friends. Curtis taught school in Knott County, Kentucky. He came to Indiana in 1940 and worked at the Government Plant in Charlestown and other plants in Indiana as well. He also liked hunting for ginseng. Later in life, Brother Curtis found the need of a Savior and cried for mercy. He joined the Chester Hogg Memorial Old Regular Baptist Church, and was baptized on May 9, 1981. He always filled his seat and will be sadly missed by his family and brothers and sisters in the Lord.
Bates, Elizabeth "Liss" By the request of Dingus Bates and with much sadness I will write an obituary of sister Liss Bates. She was the daughter of Brother Sherman Gibson and sister Margaret Gibson. Sister Liss was born May 12, 1890 and deceased June 12, 1963. She lived here on earth 73 years, and one month. Sister Liss was married to Jim Bates in the year of 1916. To this union was born six children, four boys and two girls all living. Sister Liss joined the old Regular Baptist Church April 20, 1963 and was baptized April 28, 1963 by Elder Joe Burke and Oliver Meade. Sister Liss has left a good example before her children and grandchildren and one brother and three sisters and we believe many friends to mourn the loss. So I want to say to Sister Liss children: I believe if you ever see Sister Liss anymore you will have to be as humble as Mary was when she came down to the feet of Jesus and washed his feet with tears and dried them with her hair. So children I think your mother can sing the songs of Angels together with the saints forever. Written by a brother in hope of Eternal life. Dingus Bates, her son says the funeral of Sister Liss is set the first Saturday and Sunday in July of1964 at the Linza King Graveyard on Right Beaver. Preachers chosen are Elders Eppy Holbrooks, Joe Burke, Oliver Meade, and Ervin Breeding and all preaching brothers are invited to come.

Bates, Jesse-I take up my pen this the 23rd day of December, 1943, attempt, with a feeble hand, to give a brief sketch of the life of an endured and departed father. Ten children, a great number of grandchildren, and the many friends and relatives of Jesse Bates now reflect with sadness on the cold memories of that sad day on November 30, 1943, at a time which seemed immature to those who could not understand the rapid approach of death, he closed his eyes in a silent sleep and breathed in the air of a spiritual soul. This beloved father, whom we all highly revere, was born February 25, 1856, and died November 30, 1943, being eighty-seven years, nine months, and five days old. He was born to the union of John and Betty Bates. As a child and a young man he spent his earlier days near the mouth of Bates Creek, at the old home place. When he was twenty years of age, was married to Hannah Caudill, the daughter of William and Nancy Caudill. To this union were born 13 children, nine boys and four girls; five of this number preceded him in death. He also was bereft of this loving wife after forty-six years of companionship. To this union my father remained a true and faithful husband to my mother until death did the two separate. Submitted by Denise Boyd

Breeding, Manervie Jane-With much sadness we will try to write a short obituary of a dear mother, Manervie Jane Breeding. She was born August 6, 1865 and departed this life January 8, 1949, being 83 years, 5 months and 2 days old. When the death angel visited our home and took away a loving mother. She was married to William G. Breeding April 7, 1887 at Bilva, Ky. Unto this union was born five children three boys and two girls, one boy proceeded her in death while the other four, Leeman, Charles, Aggie and Virgie are left to mourn the loss of a dear mother, whom we cared for so long. She had been afflicted in bed for eight years with a broken leg. She joined the Old Regular Baptist Church about the year of 1891, and was a faithful member until death. She enjoyed going to church as long as she was able. She was a good mother. She worked and toiled with her hands to support her children, but we feel loss is there eternally a gain. We feel that she is sleeping until the morning of sweet resurrection until all shall arise. We believe she will be a shining angel around the Throne of God, where trouble never comes. There are plenty of good things we could say about mother, but it is making the obituary too long, so dear children, don't forget mother's council.

Combs, Canton-It is with a sad and broken heart, that I will try by the help of the Lord to write an obituary of my dear husband and companion, Canton Combs. He was born Jan. 23, 1905, and departed this life March 17, 1972, making his stay on earth 67 years, 1 month and 25 days. He was the youngest son of the late K.F. and Nancy Gibson Combs. Canton and I had four children, 2 boys and 2 girls. They are: Herman of Raven, Ky., Clinas of Warsaw, Ind., Bertha Ousley of Sidney, Ind. and Beth Stevens of Warsaw, Indiana. Canton always gave our children good counsel. I can say that I never did hear him tell them anything that was wrong. I believe with all my heart that he is resting around the throne of God, and in that great morning when God calls for his children that he will be in that number. About 8 months before he passed away, while talking to his brother Mont and sister-in-law, Luna Combs, he told them at that time if he died he be1ieved that there was nothing in his way. Three days before he died while in the McDowell hospital he was talking with our son Herman. He asked Herman if he saw the two Angels on the roof top of the hospital. Oh, how lonely it is in the old home without him. I want to say to all of the children and to the rest of the family, if you want to see Daddy again you must turn to God and ask Him for forgiveness before it is too late.

Then he was sent forth to preach and comfort those that were in need, which we fell he did to the utmost of his ability. Bro. George was never too busy or tired to go when he was called upon. There was never a home too poor, no night too dark, no mountain too rough. Bro. His life stands as a monument and the life he lived stands as a shining light to all of those who have the courage, as he did, to face the future. Bro. George never bragged of things he knew, but he cherished the things he felt about his rough journey through life, that had now come to an end.We truly believe that in the paradise of Heaven, a white robe was given to one deserving it. Bro. George loved this song "I've Started for the Kingdom." I feel he is drinking from that fountain that never runs dry.

Unto his union were born seven children. Two preceded her in death, leaving four girls and one boy living. Her husband also preceded her in death in the year of 1912. She was then married to Jerry Cook, December 25, 1915. She joined the Old Regular Baptist Church in 1892 and remained a true and faithful member until death. She was blessed to live to see four of her children profess a hope in Christ and baptized into the fellowship of the same old church to which she belonged. Her conversation was always of a Godly sort and it always did her good to go to meeting and fill her seat with her brethren and sisters. We can all remember well how she would rejoice and shout praises to God. After she became afflicted until she could not go to meeting it was one of the choicest blessings to her for her brethren and sisters to visit her and sing praises to the Lord and hold worship in her home. Mother was blessed to live to a very ripe old age. She was blessed to look into the faces of all her children who are still living except one daughter who didn’t reach her bedside until after mother had passed away. It was her greatest joy to think of four of her children who confessed Christ and were showing her by their footsteps that they were seeking the same home to which mother went. She would often say that her main worry was over her two daughters who had never confessed a hope in Christ and that, if she could only see them turn to the Lord and confess a hope, that she could then died much happier. But it happened with her like it has with many other mothers. She wasn’t blessed to live to see the two daughters come to Christ. But we trust that they will fully consider that mother is gone to that sweet home on high and that, by the grace of God, they can meet mother again. She said just about two days before she died that she was going to that big meeting where she could meet her dear ones who had left her one by one and where they would never again have to part. Her funeral is to be preached at the mouth of Clear Creek, the second Saturday and Sunday in June, 1934.

her illness well and never complained. She always had a smile. Mother told me
the morning she died about a dream she had that night. She dreamed she talked to
Homer and he told her she wasn't going to be sick anymore. When she told me
about the dream, I thought she was going to get better, but now I believe that
the dream was the Lord telling her she wasn't going to be sick anymore. I feel
our mother's death is our loss and Heavens gain
Hall, Ortha-It is with much sadness that I will try to write a short obituary of
my dear sister, Ortha Hall. She was the daughter of Reuben Slone and Elizabeth
Slone. She was born June 17, 1886 and died April 2, 1948. She was married to
Monroe Hall and unto this union was born 12 children, 10 boys and 2 girls. One
girl proceeded her in death. She leaves behind her 11 children and a very
pitiful husband and many friends to mourn her loss. She belonged to the Regular
Baptist Church for many years before she died. She was in poor health several
years. She was taken to the hospital and stayed about two weeks. On the morning
she was to come home, she died suddenly. I feel she surely went to a better home
than she had on this earth. She lived a very quiet and humble life. Always loved
to fill her seat in the church. Sometimes she would become very happy and shout
and praise the Lord and talk of the beautiful home. She expected to enjoy after
she left this world. I could write many things about her but I don't feel it
necessary. I believe I will meet her again.

There is never a day that passes that our hearts and eyes aren't filled with tears, for we long to see his sweet face again. She was afflicted with diabetes and had to have both feet removed, but she bore her sickness, always smiling when things seemed to be rough. Sister Elsie and Delmar would often call brothers and sisters to come and have a little metting. She loved the church and the old songs of Zion, rejoicing in Christ her Savior, shouting praises to the High God of Heaven for the things she felt He did for her. The life she lived will stand as a memorial to all who knew her, for action is greater than pretend and life is greater than words.

We feel an angel was dispatched with the honorable discharge from Heaven saying, "Enter into the joys of the Lord thy good and faithful servant." She leaves 25 grandchildren and a host of friends and relatives to mourn her loss. Sister Lonnie was a good singer, but her voice will be more clear in that morning when the angels begin to sing, ''I've been redeemed.'' Mullins, Elder W. B. - The subject of this sketch, Elder W. B. Mullins, was born March 20, 1860; deceased September 30, 1936 aged 76 years, 6 months, and 10 days. He was married to Alva Mullins in the year of 1883 and unto this union were born four children, three girls and one boy. Alva died in the year of 1895 and Brother Mullins was then married to Nancy Caudill in the year of 1896; and unto this union was born ten children; three girls and seven boys. Brother Wall joined the Old Regular Baptist Church about the year of 1890 and began exercising a public gift and was ordained a minister in the year of 1892. The greater portion of his ministry was here in the mountain section of Kentucky. But some several years ago he moved into Lincoln or Pulaski County and spent the last years of his pilgrimage in that section of the country. After moving into that section of the country he began preaching the Old Baptist doctrine and very soon an Old Baptist Church was organized in the vicinity where he lived. He then lifted his letter and took it from the Providence Church down to where he lived and took up fellowship with the church which he helped to organize. But as Brother Mullins was so well known and as he had his fellowship with us in the New Salem Association for so long, we think it our duty to have a short obituary of him in our Minutes. So far as the writer of this sketch was able to find out, Brother Mullins remained steadfast and unmovable in the good old way and was just upon all occasions and in all places, “Plain Old-Fashioned” Wall. So as he has left a large family of children and grandchildren and a dear, lonesome wife and many other relatives and a host of Old Regular Baptist brethren and sisters, her in this world of sin and sorrow, we are glad to believe that Brother Mullins’ soul is in the sweet regions of glory and that his body will be resurrected from the grave in that final day and be purified and fashioned like Christ’s glorious body and both soul and body will be together around the throne of God forever.

Mullins, Roy , It is with much sadness, I will try to write an obituary of my beloved husband Roy Mullins. Roy was born on October 25, 1924, the son of the late Mack and Cordillia Caudill Mullins. He departed this earth May 9, 1992, making his stay here on earth 67 years. On June 30, 1947, he married June Thornsberry Mullins and to this union, the Lord blessed us with 10 children; 4 sons- Rondale, Garrett and Roy Edward all of Kite; 6 daughters-Lola Faye Patrick, willard, Ohio; Hester Picklesimer, Pauline Mullins, Ollie Layne and Mable Collins all of Prestonsburg; and Jacquline Mullins of Kite. We also have been blessed to help raise one of our grandchildren, Amber Nicole Mullins, who Roy Nicknamed "Baby Mullins". We have seven grandchildren; Roy David Patrick of Willard, Ohio, Amber Mullins of Kite, Lisa Layne, Margaret Ann and Martha Francis Picklesimer; April Violet and Haskel Collins all of Prestonsburg. Roy loved all of his grandchildren and drew strength from each if them to fight his dreadful disease. Roy was from a big family but they all preceded him in death except his beloved sister Lena Little of Dry Creek. Cancer took Roy's body but the Lord took his soul. He told me before his death that he believed with all his heart that he was ready to go Home and there was nothing against him. While he was in the hospital fighting so hard for his life he reached his hand upward and asked me if I saw the Angels that had come for him. So children, if you ever want to see Daddy again, you must seek the Lord and repent; for he can't come home to us but we can meet him in heaven where there is no more cancer and no more pain. Sleep on my beloved, I am going to meet you soon. Written with a broken heart, his beloved wife, June and his broken hearted children.

She married Dallas Wray in 1930; they had a good marriage for 57 years. Although they had no children of their own, they treated their neices and nephews as their own. When we visited them in their later days, she would always want us to sing her some songs and hold prayer. In 1948 she joined the Providence Old Regular Baptist Church and she filled her seat as long as her health would permit. Her sister, Mionia helped Uncle Dallas take care of her the last few years. She was a good Christian soldier and I believe our loss is Heaven's gain. Written with love by her nephew, Bro, Cluett Hall
