Marvin Allen Roepke, 74, active in civic affairs


Ashland OH, Marvin Allen Roepke, 74, of Ashland died Saturday morning, June 7, 2008, at OSU Hospital in Columbus.

Marvin was born May 12, 1934, in Ravenna, Portage County, to Paul Harold Roepke and Dorothea S. Steiner. He moved to Ashland with his family in 1946.

Marvin graduated in the Class of 1952 of Ashland High School. He served as class president. He attended Ashland College. He served in the U.S. Army Aus MPC, Military Police, stationed at Fort Gordon, Ga.

Marvin was vice president/secretary of P.H. Roepke & Sons Inc., a family business that was started in Ashland County in 1946 by his father. Marvin was a past member of the Ohio Petroleum Marketers Association and the National Oil Jobbers Council. He was a partner in Roepke Distributing Co., First Stop Video of Mansfield before retiring in 1999.

He was involved in his community, serving as a member of the tax abatement committee and charter revision committee for the city of Ashland. Marvin was a past member and president of Community Improvement Corp. of Ashland County, served as president of the Ashland County Cancer Association and served as a director of Bank One of Ashland.

He enjoyed the years he was a member of Ashland Jaycees, serving as president in 1965-1966. He received his Exhausted Roosters Award in June 1970. He was a former member of Masonic Lodge #151 and other Masonic bodies, including the Ashland Shrine Club. He belonged to the Ohio Genealogy Society, the Portage County Chapter of OGS and First Settlers of Portage County.

Marvin was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Ashland.

Marvin enjoyed remodeling older houses and gardening. He was an avid reader and spent many hours doing woodworking. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and "special grandchildren."

He was preceded in death by his parents; infant grandson, Zachary Paul Roepke; brother, Paul Harold Roepke II; his stepmother, Harriett Finney Roepke; his stepmother, Ruth L. Miller Sharick Roepke; and sister-in-law, Wanda Jean Gibson Vogus.

He is survived by his wife, Sarah Ann Gibson, whom he married May 16, 1955; daughter and son-in-law, Susan Dorothea and Thomas Cardille of Akron; son, James Marvin Roepke and Pam Reynolds of Ashland; son and daughter-in-law, Stephen Allen and Tena (Knowlton) Roepke of Findlay; and six grandchildren, Amanda Lee and Larissa Sue Gerwig of Akron, Andrew James and Colten James of Ashland, Rachel Lynne and Mark Allen Roepke of Findlay and by his "special grandchildren," Benjamin Reynolds and Emma Thompson. He is also survived by his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Michael L. and Barbara Gibson; brother-in-law Richard Vogus of Mansfield; a stepbrother, Raymond (Josette) Sharick of Ashland; two brothers, William E. (Alison) Roepke of Sandusky and Ashland and Robert D. (Ludmila) Roepke of Ashland; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Calling hours will be 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, June 10, 2008, at Denbow-Primm-Kemery Funeral Home.

A service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 11, 2008, at Christ United Methodist Church with the Rev. James Cox and the Rev. Thomas Snyder officiating.

Denbow-Primm-Kemery Funeral Home is in charge of cremation and a private burial will be held at a later date.
