DRAUGHAN'S CASE
ALLEGED
MURDERER WILL BE TRIED AT PAINTSVILLE
Paintsville, Ky., Jan. 26.--Crowds of people are in
town in account of the Johnson County Circuit Court
being under the new administration. In February, 1892,
Jay Draughan is charged with having killed Ben
Cunningham on Jennie's Creek, in a quarrel and eluding
the officers, made his escape. A reward of $400 was
offered for his capture, but he was not captured until
September, 1897. Jay killed his uncle, Dolph Draughan at
Fair Play, Col. He claimed self-defense, and was
acquitted, but only to fall into the hands of John
Draughan, his cousin and Deputy Sheriff John Bayes.
They brought him to the Paintsville jail, where he has
been since. Several efforts have been made to secure
bail, but none of the magistrates would agree. Draughn
will be tried this term and there is much interest in
the case.
