with John Draughan and Deputy Sheriffs
Paintsville, Ky., Oct 21- An open battle occurred in
the streets of Paintsville today between Jay Draughan on
one side and John Draughan and the Deputy Sheriffs on
the other. Jay Draughan was charged with murder. The
court, whish is in session had set his bond aside and he
was trying to escape. John Draughan, whose father Jay
killed two years ago in Colorado met Jay on Main street.
A few words passed between them and they began shooting.
John was joined by Kelz Draughn and others. All began
shooting at Jay, who was shot several times in the leg,
arm and the body, though not fatally.
Over 25 shots were fired and several persons were
wounded, as were a number of horses hitched near the
scene of the fight. After he had emptied all the
chambers of his revolver, Jay started to run. The Town
Marshal overtook him and the Draughan surrendered. By
orders of the court, Jay was carried back to jail. Jay's
overcoat was perforated with bullets. John was unhurt.
Jay was acquitted of killing John's father in Colorado,
but he is now on trial for the murder of Ben Cunningham.
When the court set aside Jay's bond, John was determined
that he should no escape. One of Jay's friends has gone
to Knott county to convey news to his friends and
relatives and further fighting is feared. The Draughans
are prominent citizens of this section all being
well-to-do, and the men are absolutely fearless
