Former teacher Bevie Pratt dies at 96

Bevie Pratt, 96, died Sunday, June 26,2005, at St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington. She was well-known and remembered in Knott County for many years of teaching, church involvement and community service.

A native of Hindman, she was born September 16, 1908, to the late James Elbert and Dora Calhoun Perkins. She was married for 60 years to Clark Pratt, a Hindman Attorney, who preceded her in death in 1993.

Bevie graduated from Hindman High School in 1926, attended Caney Junior College (now Alice Lloyd College) and received an AB degree from Berea College in 1932. She taught for 30 years in the Knott County School System

Mrs. Pratt began teaching soon after high school graduation in a one-room school in a rural section of the county, where transportation was by horseback. After retirement in 1974, she substituted at Hindman High School, where she had taught English for 24 years.

She was instrumental in organizing the Knott County Retired Teachers Association and served as the first President. In the early nineties she was acknowledged by a former student in Who's Who Among America's Teachers.
